Parent topics
- Insensitive high explosives [r]: Explosives, principally for military use, which have an extremely low probability of detonating accidentally or other than as intended in a specific application; not easily converted to improvised explosive devices, will not detonate when engulfed in fire, and, when used in the high explosive initator of a nuclear weapon, unable to trigger fission unless precisely triggered [e]
- Thermobaric explosives [r]: A member of the class of highly energetic materials and the subclass of volumetric explosives, which appear to release additional combustion energy in addition to the detonation energy of conventional explosives [e]
Subtopics
Components
- RDX [r]: "Royal Demolition eXplosive" or "Research Department eXplosive", also known as Hexogen or Cyclonite; chemically hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine; considered the most powerful common military explosive; a member of the nitramine class of organic nitrate explosives [e]
- Ammonium perchlorate [r]: Primarily used as an oxidizing agent in solid rockets but also as an explosive component, with the formula NH4NO3 [e]
- Aluminium powder [r]: When added to explosives, increases the detonation velocity of explosions or the specific impulse of solid rocket propellants [e]
- Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene [r]: Known as HTPB, a polymer of butadiene, is a thick, sticky liquid, available with different viscosities, used as a binder for plastic-bonded explosives and solid-fuel rocket engines, as an adhesive and sealant, and as a feedstock for polyurethane production [e]
Uses
- AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile [r]: Long-range (>250mi/370km) stealthy air-launched cruise missile with a conventional warhead having hard target penetrator capability [e]
- BLU-121 [r]: 2000-pound class thermobaric explosives warhead hard target penetrator, successor to BLU-118 with improved CS-1c steel hardened case allowing bomb to "skip" over ground and a new AFX-757 explosive [e]
- BLU-122 [r]: 5000 lb class hard target penetrator warhead, improvement on the BLU-113 used as part of GBU-28 with F-15E Strike Eagle and B-2 Spirit aircraft [e]
- GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb [r]: A relatively small U.S. guided bomb, several of which can be carried in a single rack position intended for Mark 8x series conventional bombs; with its accurate guidance, and the use of a new explosive, AFX-757, which puts higher pressure into a smaller radius, it reduces collateral damage while allowing more targets to be hit in a sortie [e]
