The Miami Marlins are a Major League Baseball team based in Miami, Florida. The team was founded in 1993 as the Florida Marlins, an expansion team in the National League. [1] [2] [3]

Championships

The team has had two championship-winning seasons since the beginning of major-league baseball's modern World Series in 1903, winning the World Series in 1997 and 2003. These were also the only seasons that they were National League champions. [4]

Locations and Nicknames

The team has been based in Miami since its inception in 1993. They have played their home games at the following stadiums. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]

  • 2012-present: loanDepot Park (originally named Marlins Park, renamed loanDepot Park in 2021)
  • 1993-2011: Sun Life Stadium (Originally named Joe Robbie Stadium, renamed Pro Player Stadium in 1997, Dolphin(s) Stadium in 2005, Land Shark Stadium in 2009, and Sun Life Stadium in 2010)

They have been known as the Marlins for their entire history. Originally founded as the Florida Marlins, they changed their name to the Miami Marlins starting with the 2012 season.

Retired Numbers

Many teams have retired certain uniform numbers in that players, managers, and coaches of the team will no longer use them. As of 2023 the Marlins have only retired one number, 42, which was worn by Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers and is retired by every team across major league baseball. [10]
