From 1767 he lived either at Edinburgh or at a villa which he built at Kilduff near his former parish. It was at this time that he wrote his ''History of the Rebellion of 1745'', which appeared in 1802. Home died at Merchiston Bank, near Edinburgh, on the 5th of September 1808.
