The term "pars distalis" is sometimes used as a synonym for the anterior pituitary, but this is not quite correct. • Pars tuberalis [r]: Rostral part of the anterior pituitary gland, closely integrated with the median eminence, that in some species regulates anterior pituitary endocrine function by mediating the actions of melatonin. [e]
Cell types
  • Lactotroph [r]: Endocrine cell type in the anterior pituitary gland that secretes prolactin. [e]
  • Gonadotroph [r]: Endocrine cell type in the anterior pituitary gland that secretes luteinising hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. [e]
  • Somatotroph [r]: Endocrine cell type in the anterior pituitary gland that secretes growth hormone. [e]
  • Corticotroph [r]: Endocrine cell type in the anterior pituitary gland that secretes ACTH. [e]
  • Thyrotroph [r]: Endocrine cell type in the anterior pituitary gland that secretes thyroid-stimulating hormone. [e]
