| |Notes= The year this photo was taken and published is almost certainly 1910, when Van der Waals received a Nobel. Not knowing its other originating factors, however, it is impossible to state with certainty that it is in the [[public domain]]. [[The Nobel Foundation]] claims [[copyright]] over this image on their website;[http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/laureates/1910/waals-bio.html] however, upon direct query they stated they did not actually know who held the copyright ([[Image_talk:Johannes Diderik van der Waals.jpg/Permission|see correspondence]]). At least two major collections hold physical copies of the photo, created around the time of original publication: 1) [[The University of Amsterdam]] Museum, and [[The Smithsonian Institution]] Library[http://www.sil.si.edu/digitalcollections/hst/scientific-identity/CF/display_results.cfm?alpha_sort=w]. It is suggested that The University of Amsterdam Museum be credited. Please expand and/or correct this information on this image's talk page if additional, verifiable facts, become available.
