(1884-1945) German lawyer, elected Mayor of Leipzig in 1930, early member of the German Resistance who traveled, in the late 1930s, warning European leaders not to deal with Hitler; began to consider assassinating Hiter with Ludwig Beck in 1940; part of the 1944 assassination attempt against Hitler and designated Chancellor in the post-coup country; arrested in August, interrogated under torture for five months, and executed in February
